U.S. coins are primarily made up of nickel, zinc and copper. Copper is an extremely valuable metal and was used to create many coins since the beginning of coin creation. The composition has changed to using other less expensive metals to save the U.S. mint money.

What is the scrap value of a penny?

Many estimate that each copper penny is worth about one and a half cents, though this fluctuates every day with the market value of copper. However, melting these pennies down is illegal, meaning that they are not viable for scrapping at this time.

What kind of metals are used in coins?

All of these coins are produced using alloys, or mixtures of metals; the main metals used include copper, nickel, zinc and iron. The composition of some of the coins has also changed since their original introduction, for reasons which are examined below.

How are waste materials used in metal mining?

Waste materials from metal mining, such as mineral tailings, often contain significant amounts of potentially valuable metals particularly where, as in many historic operations, the efficiency of flotation technologies used to concentrate target minerals was not as good as those currently available.

What do you do with your metal tokens?

Metal rewards you in MTL tokens through a process called Proof of Processed Payment, or PoPP. Instead of distributing coins to miners through Proof of Work, PoPP is Metal’s method of distributing coins to people. After confirming your identity with Metal, you’ll be rewarded in MTL via PoPP for sending fiat or converting fiat into crypto.
