Technically, anyone can turn down a job offer, back out of a job already started, or renege on an acceptance at any point. Most states operate with what is called “at will employment.” This means the employee and the employer are not in a binding contract.

How do I tell a company I accepted another offer?

The best approach is to be brief but honest about your specific reason for not accepting the position, saying something like:

  1. After careful consideration, I’ve decided to accept a position at another company.
  2. After much thought, I’ve decided that now is not the best time to leave my current position.

How do you respond to an accepted offer?

Dear [New employer], As we discussed on the phone, I am very pleased to accept the position of [position title] with [organization]. Thank you for the opportunity. I am eager to make a positive contribution to the company and to work with everyone on the [organization name] team.

Can I reject offer after accepting?

As long as a written offer / contract has not been signed, an employer can withdraw a job offer. Declining a job offer after accepting is not ideal, but it can be done. If you’re amicable and polite, there’s no reason why you can’t stay in touch with contacts you’ve made through the interview process.

When should you accept a job offer?

While being respectful of the employer’s time, it is perfectly acceptable to take one to two business days to make sure you fully understand the offer. If they ask you to respond immediately, ask politely if you can have 24 hours to review the terms.

Can you decline a job offer you have already accepted?

Even though the employer would be thrilled to have you on board, they would prefer you to let them know before you start the job. There are strategies you can use to professionally decline a job offer, even if you have accepted it already. Why do candidates have second thoughts after they have said “yes” to a new job?

Which is better an offer on the table or a better offer?

The better offer on the table wasn’t better because of the salary. I was actually considering a steep pay-cut. No, the offer was preferable, in part, because it offered something my current employer couldn’t: the ability to work remotely.

Is it better to take an offer or a job offer?

No, the offer was preferable, in part, because it offered something my current employer couldn’t: the ability to work remotely. Most of the dozen human resource managers, career coaches and recruiters I interviewed over email for this story weren’t on my side.

Why did I accept the first job offer?

You might have accepted the first offer because it seemed better on the surface, or because you desperately needed income to cover something like student loan payments. Now you might be trying to leave because of one or more of these facts: The job or the company wasn’t what you were promised during the interview process.
