What happens to a house with a mortgage when the owner dies?

When a person dies before paying off the mortgage on a house, the lender still has the right to its money. Generally, the estate pays off the mortgage, a beneficiary inherits the house and pays the mortgage or the house is sold to pay the mortgage.
