After a 10-month search, NASA and NHTSA scientists found no electronic defect in Toyota vehicles. However, on October 24, 2013, a jury ruled against Toyota and found that unintended acceleration could have been caused due to deficiencies in the drive-by-wire throttle system or Electronic Throttle Control System (ETCS).

What causes sudden unintended acceleration?

Sudden unintended acceleration occurs when an electronic malfunction within the vehicle causes the throttle to expand and the car to accelerate without the driver pressing down on the gas pedal. If a vehicle has a defect in its electronic system, the mechanism that controls the car’s power train could malfunction.

When did Toyota have acceleration problems?

2009
Safety fears erupted around some of Toyota’s most popular models in 2009, when California Highway Patrol officer Mark Saylor and three family members were killed in a high-speed crash caused by the unintended acceleration of his car.

What to do if car keeps accelerating?

What do you do? Resist the urge to turn off the engine, as you’ll lose power brakes and power steering, which you’ll need to safely bring your car to a stop and maneuver off the road. Make sure your foot is only on the brake pedal – this is the most common driver error – and press hard.

What should you do if you experience unintended acceleration?

When you experience a sudden unintended acceleration, you should move your foot over to the brake pedal and keep steady pressure on the brake. Do not keep pumping the brake pedal. In these cases, the brakes may need more force than normal, so you may need to press down harder. Shift to neutral.

Why does my car accelerate slowly when I press the gas?

Defective Fuel Pump: The fuel pump pulls the fuel from the gas tank to the engine via the fuel lines. If the pump stops working, malfunctions, or becomes clogged, it will not supply enough fuel to the injectors. This can cause the vehicle to accelerate slowly, or even sputter and stall, especially at high speeds.

Why is my car over accelerating?

There are a few possible causes of this but most of the time it is caused by a failing throttle body. If the throttle plate sticks and does not return to the correct position then the vehicle will accelerate. In some cases it can also be caused by the floor mats in the vehicle.

What causes engine hesitation on acceleration?

An engine that is hesitating to accelerate is most likely dealing with a fuel/air mixture that is too lean. Engine’s that are running inefficiently will begin to show signs like hesitation which will only become worse over time.

How many Toyotas have had sudden acceleration problems?

Based on how many tin whiskers they discovered and how many NASA found, they estimated that the whiskers could cause shorting failures in 140 out of 1 million vehicles, which could result in more sudden acceleration cases. Given that Toyota sold 3.3 million cars in the past two years alone, such a rate would amount to a significant problem.

What was the problem with the Toyota recalls?

In late 2009, Toyota issued a recall citing evidence that floor mats in some models were apparently getting stuck under the gas pedal, causing acceleration. In early 2010, Toyota issued a second recall, saying some gas pedals could stick, continuing to add gas to the engine even after a driver took a foot off the pedal.

What was the data from the Toyota accelerator scandal?

Data from many of the “black boxes” from cars involved in incidents of unintended acceleration showed that in most cases, the brakes were never even touched. The drivers were often in vehicles that were new or unfamiliar to them, or for whatever reason, they just got confused.

What was the problem with the Toyota accelerator pedal?

The return spring action of the accelerator pedal was found to be “smooth and unencumbered.” Another investigation conducted by the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department found that three days prior to the crash another customer had complained to the dealership about the floor mat trapping the same loaner car’s accelerator pedal while driving.
